What does the internet think of

 'Windows Phone'? The results

may surprise you

What Does the Internet Think about Windows Phone
When it comes to the brand ‘Windows Phone’ everyone has an opinion and everybody is also a self-appointed expert on marketing.A lot of comments lean towards the idea that Microsoft's brand is baggage, a discussion that is amplified with the proposed purchase of Nokia and the future of the Lumia trademark. The reason for then negative perception most often proposed? Its deleterious association with Windows desktop, of course.

Take the Lumia 1020 into a photo studio and you’ll get

stunning results

Lumia 1020
As if you needed more proof that the Nokia Lumia 1020 has the best camera on a smartphone. We’ve seen it pushed to the limits with a photographer for National Geographic. And just earlier today we saw the results from giving snapping on a macro lens to the already impressive camera magic in the Lumia 1020. So what happens when the Lumia 1020 is put in a studio setting? Very impressive results. Check them out below.
Nokia’s resident camera expert, Ari Partinen, took the Lumia 1020 into the studio. Shooting in the studio is great because the photographer can control literally everything, especially the lighting. Along with colleague Marko Saari, Ari used various soft boxes and external flashes for the shoot. The Pro Cam app on the Lumia 1020 allows users fine control over various settings. For the photo shoot, white balance was set to daylight, ISO was at 100, and the exposure time set to 1/200.

How to weed out your Nokia Lumia 1020

 high resolution image files

Nokia Lumia 1020
Question. How do you go about deleting the high resolution image files from you Nokia Lumia 1020Windows Phone without deleting the 5MP, lower resolution copies?
That's a question Windows Phone Central reader Binson#WP has tossed out over in the WPCentral Forums. There's no way to sync just the low resolution images and you can't see the high res image file from your phone. So what's the solution?

Rumor: Nokia to release the

 Lumia 525, codenamed ‘Glee’

Next month in Abu Dhabi, Nokia is expected to unveil quite a few new devices including a phablet and tablet.  Now leakster Twitter account Evleaks is claiming that the ‘Nokia Glee’ is really the Lumia 525, a follow up of sorts to the Lumia 520.

Verizon is expected to launch the new Nokia Lumia 929 in early November, sources familiar with the matter have revealed to us. An inventory date of November 6th is listed for the phablet device, which may range in the 5-inch range as opposed to AT&T’s expected 6-inch device codenamed “Beastie” (also known as the Lumia 1520).

Nokia tablet sails through FCC,

 with support for AT&T and

Verizon LTE

Nokia Tablet FCC
Nokia has a strong following who still look forward to a Windows tablet. Speculation and rumours have been in the spotlight since the company started making Windows Phones and Microsoft releasedWindows 8 to the world. Currently being purchased by Microsoft, should the deal go through, we'll see future handsets be released by Redmond, but that doesn't stop Nokia from innovating and launching new hardware in the mean time.
The FCC has now approved a mysterious device, the RX-114. Require some proof that this is indeed a Nokia tablet? Feast your eyes on the above image pulled from the documentation, courtesy of Engadget. While the details are rather pixelated, it's clear to see exactly what we're looking at with multiple references to "tablet" alone. This could well be the tablet we've been covering the past months.

Mugenizer N11
Portable chargers are becoming more and more popular, especially with Windows Phones. Nokia is pushing forward with wireless charging and its own family of chargers that can be carried along for the ride. The Lumia 1020 also has a portable charger inside its camera grip accessory. Now Mugen Power will be unleashing a 4800mAh wireless portable charger, and it supports the Qi standard.

Gameloft announces Asphalt 8

 and 14 more games for

 Windows Phone 8 and

 Windows 8 [Updated]

Asphalt 8 Gamescom logo
As mobile Xbox gamers probably know, Halfbrick recently released a new version of Fruit Ninja and Square Enix’s Chaos Rings became available to all Windows Phone 8 users last week. Beyond that however, we aren’t aware of too many game developers with plans to support Xbox Windows Phone in the future. Microsoft has been dark on the subject all year, and nobody else is really talking…
Nobody except Gameloft, that is. Last year, the publisher announced 12 Xbox Windows Phone 8 games – 10 of which have launched so far. Today Gameloft has reaffirmed its commitment to mobile Windows platforms by promising 15 more games for Windows Phone and Windows 8! Only four new Windows Phone games have actually been revealed, but it’s exciting news regardless… especially for Windows 8, which will be seeing much more support from Gameloft in the near future.
Head past the break for exclusive details on today’s announcement!

Coming to Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 in 2013

As I just mentioned, Gameloft has largely been cool towards Windows 8 since the tablet and PC OS launched last year. The publisher has released only one game so far: physics puzzler Shark Dash. Arcade racer Asphalt 7: Heat is due out this month as well. After that, the 15 games in the announcement will follow.
News of those games coming to Windows Phone and Windows 8 would be great enough on its own, but it doesn’t stop there. Gameloft also promised that several of the announced games will feature cross-platform multiplayer between phone and tablet! We don’t know if Play/Pause/Resume support via cloud saves is on the table, but let’s hope so. And let’s also hope that hit MMORPG Order & Chaos Onlinemakes its way to Windows 8 with cross-platform multiplayer. Dare we dream?

Top Windows 8 games to sit back and relax

Windows Phone Central Roundup: Windows 8 Games
Last week we checked out the Top Windows 8 games for the “hardcore” gamer; this week, we are heading in the opposite direction and taking a look at the top Windows 8 games for those of you who just want to kick back. Cue the relaxing playlist on Spotify, grab a glass of California Merlot, and turn on that foot massager – we are counting off some of the Top Windows 8 games to sit back and relax.

Microsoft Mahjong

Microsoft contributes a few titles to our list today and the first is a remake of the Chinese game, Mahjong, from 500 BC. The boys in Redmond are definitely not the first to create a virtual game of Mahjong, but they sure got it right.
For the few of you who are unaware of how Mahjong is played, it is simple. A stack of tiles with various designs are laid out in front of you and your objective is to match identical tiles you see. Once you make a match, you remove the two tiles from the surface. Your goal to win is to clear the entire surface of tiles. The most important rule is that you cannot match tiles that are covered by other tiles or surrounded on both sides.
Players can choose from four relaxing surface (background) themes including “Tranquility” (a Zen garden), “Autumn Glade” (a lake in autumn), the cosmos, and underwater.
The game is simple to control via touch screen or mouse and offers a collection of Xbox Live achievements to collect. Difficulty can be selected and varies between Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert.
A daily challenge can be played to unlock monthly badges and prizes.

StoryTeller for Windows Phone and Windows 8
In about three and a half weeks we’ll be live from Abu Dhabi where Nokia is expected to release a handful of new devices for Windows Phone and even Windows 8. Of course there will be some Asha devices as well, but you really want to know about the higher-end hardware. Nokia is also known for releasing new software and apps alongside devices. And it looks like an app called StoryTeller is coming for both Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.

Surface
Microsoft announced the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 last week at an event in New York City. The two devices, along with their new accessories, are due out on October 22th. Pre-orders started last Tuesday online and in-person. If you wanted to pre-order online you’d have to pay the full price of the device or accessory. However, if you did the pre-order in person at your local Microsoft Store you had to put at least $50 down to reserve your device.
Starting today, you can reserve your Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 without paying until you pick it up.

Nokia plays with lightning to charge a Lumia 925 Windows Phone in seconds

Lumia 925
Nokia has been playing with the wireless transfer of energy and mobile phones since the Lumia 920, which was the first Windows Phone to feature wireless charging - a cool concept that's incredibly useful in the field. But what if you could go one step further and charge your phone with lightning? Nokia has teamed up with the University of Southampton to achieve just that.
Harnessing hundreds of thousands of volts, the teams attempted to tame the (in this case, simulated) natural force and managed to successfully charge a Nokia Windows Phone - the Lumia 925. Inviting Neil Palmer, a scientist at the University, it was possible to power the smartphone with the tools available. Palmer explains:
"We were excited by this challenge presented to us by Nokia. Using an alternating current, driven by a transformer, over 200,000 volts was sent across a 300mm gap – giving heat and light similar to that of a lightning bolt. The signal was then stepped into a second controlling transformer, allowing us to charge the phone."
So what was the end result? They were able to charge the handset in seconds. Imagine that, your phone has just ran out of juice, but fear not as you could whip up a bolt of lightning and you're done in a few seconds. Neil notes how the team was amazed to see how Nokia's circuitry was able to stabilise the noisy signal and allowed the battery to draw charge.
What's more is the current was passed through the air, helping the team to understand how the energy could potentially be harnessed in future. Nokia never fails to show exactly how the company is looking to push boundaries to innovate and try out new things. On a rather obvious note, Nokia recommends that you do not try this at home.

New 6tag update allows you to pin your favorite Instagram peeps to your Start screen and more

6tag v1.4
Earlier this week we shared with you details on the 6tag 1.4 update coming from Rudy Huyn. And guess what? It’s here tonight.

DualShot for Windows Phone launches tomorrow, here’s your first look

DualShot
Apps that are beautiful, functional, with good performance, and new to Windows Phone are what we love. On Windows Phone we’ve been known to have a handful of apps that meet that description. Which is why we’re happy to see another one about to join the Windows Phone Store. It’s called DualShot and it’s coming tomorrow.

Microsoft's most loyal users ask for Surface trade-in program

One of the top requests in a Reddit 'Ask Me Anything' with the Surface team was for a tablet buyback deal to fund purchases of newest devices

Computerworld - One of the most common questions posed to Microsoft's Surface team Monday was whether the company would buy back used tablets so that customers could upgrade to the newest models set to ship in a month.
The Microsoft developers, engineers and program managers who hosted a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" chat Monday afternoon didn't ignore the buyback questions, but had little to offer as an answer.
For two hours Monday, the Surface team, led by Panos Panay, the executive who heads the group and who earlier in the day introduced the new Surface 2 line to reporters and analysts, took on Reddit readers in a wide-ranging online Q&A.
While Panos and others from Microsoft revealed a few news nuggets, notably that the company will launch Surface tablets early next year that can connect to mobile data networks, one issue that came up time and again was about a first-generation Surface trade-in program.

Microsoft sails past Oracle in bringing Java SE to cloud

Microsoft's Windows Azure now offers a certified version of the Java OpenSDK as a cloud service

IDG News Service - While Oracle CEO Larry Ellison focuses his attention on the America's Cup sailing race, Oracle is rushing to keep up in another race, the one to get its Java SE in the cloud.
While Oracle holds its annual OpenWorld user conference this week, Microsoft announced that Oracle's Java SE can be run on Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud service, using a newly certified implementation of the OpenJDK called Zulu, which was developed by Azul systems.
Azul, which is an Oracle Community Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) licensee, completed the OpenJDK build for Azure, work on which was first announced in July, on behalf of Microsoft Open Technologies.

Windows 8 Bay Trail tablets may finally hit prices consumers are willing to pay

Bay Trail

Asus is first out the door with a price tag for systems based on Intel’s Bay Trail and it looks as though the company aims to correct the catastrophic pricing decisions that helped doom both Surface and Clover Trail. According to company representatives, the Asus Transformer Book T100 convertible will ship in two flavors — a 32GB version for $350 and a 64GB version for $400. The new system uses Intel’s Z3740 Bay Trail processor. That version of the chip is limited to 1.8GHz rather than the 2.4GHz that the company has been showing at IDF, but performance will still be 2-3x better than Clover Trail, clock for clock.
The display is a 10.1-inch IPS model with a 1366×768 resolution. While that’s not as nice as Apple’s Retina Displays, it’s still 155 PPI — significantly higher than most monitors and more than acceptable on a device in this price category. The tablet has just 2GB of RAM, but that should prove more than sufficient for the form factor. Part of what’s significant about the T100 is that the $350/$400 price tag includes the dock rather than breaking it out as a $100 – $150 attachable keyboard with incredibly dubious value.

Snapchat, Windows Phone and what you need to know

Snapchat on Windows Phone?
After getting our unofficial Instagram app for Windows Phone, people’s eyes turned the next big thing in social media: Snapchat (www.snapchat.com). For those who don’t know (and who are over 25), Snapchat is a new messaging service that’s super popular on iOS and Android.
It’s trick? Photos you send auto-delete themselves after a set amount of seconds.  And yes, it’s coming to Windows Phone--unofficially and officially.

Beta Preview: Dark Lands, a shadowy combat game for Windows

Dark Lands
We first mentioned Dark Lands a few months ago. It's an action/adventure game for our Windows Phone that is being developed by Mingle Games and is one of the many projects associated with the Microsoft/Nokia sponsored AppCampus.
Dark Lands is an infinity running game that also has elements of a fighting and RPG game. A battle runner game if you will.
We have been given access to the beta version of Dark Lands and it makes a very admirable first impression. Graphics are well drawn up, game play challenging, and controls nicely responsive. It's a fast paced game that should appeal to many.
Keep in mind that our experience is with a beta version of Dark Lands and the final release may be slightly different here and there.
Dark Lands Menu
The main menu for Dark Lands has options to jump into the game, view the information screens, check out your character profile, view your achievements, visit the gaming store, and access the game's settings. Settings cover sound/music levels and the option to display a health bar on the gaming screen.
Dark Lands Character Information
Dark Lands Character Information
When you first start playing Dark Lands you are sent through a tutorial that will cover all your control gestures and the actions available. After you play the tutorial, you can always revisit it through the "?" symbol on the settings screen.
Game play is straight forward in that your character will be running across the screen and you are tasked with guiding him over/under obstacles, battle monsters and collect bonus items here and there. The goal? See how far you can survive.
Dark Lands Gaming Screen
The obstacles are a nasty collection of saw blades, spinning blades or death, bear traps, spike traps, and other items that will turn you into a bloody mess. Monsters range from Minotaurs to small dragon-like creatures to plain old enemy troops.
Your gaming controls are all gesture based and control your jumps, defensive moves, slides and attacks. Your movement is constantly forward and you can't slow your character down.
Dark Lands Store
Dark Lands Store
As you play Dark Lands you'll earn gems/crystals that can be used to upgrade your equipment and weapons and upgrade your character's abilities. It also appears that you can purchase gems/crystals through in-app purchases to help you get a jump on things.
Graphics are minimalistic and a little on the dark side (and not as in dimly lit) but look fantastic. The graphics reminds me of the movie "300". Sound effects have a painful tone to them that adds to the game. Game play has a fast pace to it and can be rather challenging. I like the RPG elements where you can upgrade your character and gear.

Controls are fairly responsive but there were times when I slashed instead of jumped or there was a slight delay in seeing the action played out on the screen. Nothing detrimental and likely something that will be ironed out before release.
In the short time we've had our hands on Dark Lands, we find it to be an entertaining and challenging game for both Windows Phone 8 and 7.x devices (in-app purchases not available for the Windows 7.x version). The actual release date is still a few weeks away.  The developers have a little fine tuning to do with Dark Lands and then it goes to AppCampus approval and then Microsoft certification.  We'll keep an eye on things and once Dark Lands becomes available, we'll let you know.

Nokia Lumia 1020 shows demand by selling out at Indian retailer before official launch

Lumia 1020
The Lumia 1020 by Nokia continues to launch around the world and soon India will be able to get its hand on the Windows Phone in stores. Until Nokia officially launches the product in the region, consumers have been able to place pre-orders at participating retailers, including Snapdeal. The retailer has now sold out of the Lumia 1020 in yellow, black and white.
Why is this worth noting? India has been a stronghold for the Lumia 520, an affordable Windows Phone. Reports have been published recently that pointed at Microsoft and partners struggling to push high-end hardware, in favour of cheaper devices. Since India appears to have warmed to the expensive Lumia 1020, we can safely assume this is not the case. That's the good news.
Lumia 1020 India
The not-so-good news is that we could be witnessing lack of supply with only a handful of units available. Other retailers, including Flipkart and Saholic have the Windows Phone listed as coming soon. Expect to see more availability, but early signs are positive for now.

Windows 8.1 reached RTM status earlier in August and a few weeks later developers had the chance to download and start testing their applications with it. But Windows 8.1 isn’t done. Microsoft initially wanted to not even let developers download the bits until October 18th (public release).
So what else are they working on before the public get to play with Windows 8.1?

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is now available at AT&T

If taking photos of your friends, kids, family, or travels is something you care about even a little bit—and who doesn’t?—you’ll want to run to the nearest AT&T store and pick up the new Nokia Lumia 1020 with Windows Phone 8, which officially goes on sale today. The 4G LTE phone, which costs $299 with a standard contract, comes in yellow, white, and black. You can grab one at AT&T’s retail and online stores.
1200-nokia_lumia-1020_product_image
In-depth reviews started to hit this week, and it looks like the phone and its 41-megapixel camera sensor are living up to its billing and leaving reviewers struggling for superlatives. “This is clearly a camera phone that helps define a new era of smartphone photography,” said CNET. “The Lumia 1020 is the best Windows Phone we've used so far and offers the best camera in the industry,” concluded Engadget. USA Today’s Ed Baig said the camera was “about as good as you can get on a smartphone.”
The phone’s cutting-edge 41 megapixel back-side illuminated camera sensor is responsible for much of this praise (and if you really want the juicy details on how it works and why it’s so awesome, check out this interesting deep dive on the technology from Nokia). But the other key ingredient is the built-in Nokia Pro Camera app, which is designed to take full advantage of the breakthrough imaging technology and make it easy for anybody to shoot, edit, and share amazing photos and video. Pros can also use it to manually adjust flash, focus, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and other key settings.
Speaking of apps, one other one you’ll want is Hipstamatic Oggl PRO, a new version of the popular social photo editing app made exclusively for Nokia’s Lumia 1020. For a full rundown of its impressive features, check out my other post today—or just download Hipstamatic Oggl PRO here and start playing around. One notable callout: The app can post your stylized photos directly to Instagram and other popular social networks. (Hipstamatic also released a standard version of the app that works on all other Windows Phone 8 smartphones.)
The Nokia Lumia 1020 and its camera grip accessory, which was a hit with reviewers.
If you’re planning to pick up a new Lumia 1020, there are also a bunch of special offers that you should know about. While supplies last, the Microsoft Store is offering a free Nokia Camera Grip to customers who buy the phone there. Many of the reviews I read this week heaped lots of praise on this $79 clip-on accessory, which has a tripod mount, extra 1020mAh rechargeable battery, and makes the phone feel more like a point-and-shoot in the hand.
Anyone who buys a Windows Phone 8 at a Microsoft Store also receives a gift card good for $10 worth of apps (see if there’s a store near you).
Finally, for a limited time every Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with a voucher that can be redeemed for a free 20x30 SmileBooks print poster—the perfect way to show off those beautiful new photos.

Show us your apps & new release: Windows Phone App Studio Beta

It’s been more than a month since we last updated you on Windows Phone App Studio beta, and like you, we’ve been busy working with App Studio! On our end, we’ve reviewed your feedback, made some improvements, and yes, even took a little time to enjoy the last few days of summer. We hope you did too.
Before I go into details, I want to thank each of you for sharing your feedback and for your ongoing support of Windows Phone App Studio. You’ve downloaded the code and built some really compelling apps. Some are for personal use, but also hundreds have been successfully published in the Windows Phone Store as well.
I’m pleased to tell you today that we’ve updated App Studio beta, incorporating feature requests and suggestions you’ve shared with us so far. We improved usability and performance, and updated the quality of the code generated. (And some bug fixes too!)
Look around in App Studio and you’ll see that the menu bar now makes it easier to navigate. We enhanced the navigation buttons and made it much easier to edit collections after an app is created. We added dozens of new graphics elements: icons, backgrounds, and stock images you can use to enhance and sharpen the visual identity of your app.
In response to your feedback, in this newest version, we’ve integrated with SkyDrive, making it easy to access your pictures. (By the way, did you know that if you make your collections dynamic we keep all of your data stored in the cloud, and you can edit them without creating a new version of your app?)
We’ve also made a ton of progress enhancing the Visual Studio project template and the code that it generates. Our goal is clean and lean code that’s easier to read and which speeds up the app creation process. I invite you to review the source code and Visual Studio project template to experience firsthand some of our App Studio updates: improved naming conventions for consistency across your project, simplified projects and app manifests, and pinch to zoom.
If you’ve created an app with App Studio that you think is ready for worldwide availability through the Store, we’d like hear from you - your ideas, learnings, and experiences. We want to help you reach potential customers, and help Windows Phone users find you! We’re also eager to find out how you are using App Studio for your local or personal apps, and what types of scenarios you still need to help with.

Nokia PureView showdown: Comparing the Lumia 920, 925 and 1020 cameras

Nokia Lumia Windows Phone Cameras
There's little debate that Nokia has changed the way we look at our Windows Phone cameras. From the PureView technology to optical image stabilization (OIS) to making Zeiss a household name, Nokia has designed a healthy, quality assortment of cameras for their Lumia Windows Phones.
While the weather wasn't exactly agreeable all the time, we took the Nokia Lumia 1020, 925 and 920 out to see how these three cameras compared. All three are solid contenders to satisfy your smartphone photographic needs but is the Lumia 1020 the clear winner? The answer may surprise you.

Specifications - How they differ, how they are the same

Each camera has optical image stabilization (OIS) to minimize camera motion, allowing longer exposures and less blur. Backside illuminated sensors (BSI) are present as well, which puts the wires behind the hardware allowing better low-light images. Finally, all three have PureView technology (Nokia's secret sauce so to speak) and each utilizes Zeiss optics.
However, the Lumia 925 and 1020 have six lens-elements versus the five in the Lumia 920. The extra lens element allows the 925 and 1020 to capture slightly sharper daylight images and yes, it matters.
Lumia 1020 Sensor
Now for the differences in the lens and sensor sizes...
  • Lumia 920: 8.7 MP 1/3.2" sensor and a f/2.0 26 mm lens.
  • Lumia 925: 8.7 MP 1/3" sensor and a f/2.0 26 mm lens.
  • Lumia 1020: 41 MP 1/1.5" sensor and a f/2.2 26 mm lens.
The Lumia 1020 and 925 have access to Nokia's Pro Cam camera app. The Lumia 920 does too if you are one of the fortunate souls to be able to update your Lumia 920 to the Lumia Amber firmware. Nokia's Pro Cam gives you more control over the camera's settings (shutter speed, focus, ISO, etc.) and it has that cool "zoom later" feature. While we are a fan of Nokia's Pro Cam, the native Windows Phone app performs rather spot on within it's own right.
Nokia Lumia Camera Samples
Nokia Lumia Photo Samples - Lumia 920, 925, 1020 (left to right)
And with my AT&T Lumia 920 not yet updated (come on AT&T release it already!) to be fair, we used the native camera app for the comparison between these three Windows Phones.  Each image was shot at the 16:9 ratio with the settings on automatic and handheld (thus the slight differences in framing).

Results - Comparing the Lumia 920, 925 and 1020

Nokia Lumia Camera Performance
Nokia Lumia Photo Samples - Lumia 920, 925 and 1020 (left to right)
In many respects, I saw little or no difference in the performance of these three Lumia cameras in optimum conditions. However, I feel comfortable in making the following assertions after looking at images taken across a wide variety of lighting conditions.
  • The Nokia Lumia 1020 had the better color saturation, warmer white balance and sharpness.  The Lumia 920 and 925 camera's saturation, white balance and sharpness wasn't terrible or beyond correction through post-processing apps.
Lumia Camera Image Samples
Nokia Lumia Photo Samples - Lumia 920, 925 and 1020 (left to right)
  • The Nokia Lumia 925 performed better in lower lighting conditions with regards to exposure, but the optical stabilization wasn't as strong as the Lumia 1020's at slower shutter speeds. The Lumia 925 seemed to allow a lot more light to the sensor, but the Lumia 1020's images were a touch sharper.  On a side note, I also found that the native Windows Phone camera app captured better low light images than what Nokia's Pro Cam captured. Why that is, is not clear at the moment.
Nokia Lumia Night Samples
Nokia Lumia Photo Samples - Lumia 920, 925, 1020 (left to right)
  • While still a solid performer, the Lumia 920's images were a touch softer and had a cooler white balance (slightly blue overcast) at times. The softness can be attributed to having only 5 lens elements versus the 6 found in the Lumia 925 and 1020 mentioned earlier. I also noticed a few cases where the Lumia 920's images were slightly underexposed.  The photos taken from the bridge were shot under rainy, over cast skies.  The Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925 seemed to handle the lighting conditions a bit better than the Lumia 920.
Nokia Lumia Camera Samples
Nokia Lumia Photo Samples - Lumia 920, 925, and 1020 (left to right)
  • It is challenging to shoot pictures with any of these cameras while holding an umbrella.  Makes me wish Nokia had a waterproof housing (hint, hint).

Nokia Pro Cam

While the AT&T Lumia 920 lacks the ability to take advantage of Nokia's Pro Cam at this time, we did take a peak at how the Lumia 1020 and 925 handled one of Pro Cam's main features, zoom later.
Nokia Zoom Later - Uncropped

Nokia Lumia Zoom Later - Cropped
Nokia Lumia "Zoom Later" - Lumia 925 (left) and Lumia 1020 (right)
Obviously with the higher resolution and larger sensor, the Lumia 1020 has more room to work with as far as re-cropping an image. While you can zoom a good bit with the Lumia 925, the further you zoom the more image quality suffers. The Lumia 925's zoom later sample is zoomed to the max, focusing on the yellow paint remover cans.  We zoomed into the same photo using the Lumia 1020, trying to match the crop as closely as possible.  To further match the images, the Lumia 925's image was resized up to that of the Lumia 1020.  When zoomed to the max, the original Lumia 925 image was 231x174 pixels while the 1020's image was 465x348 pixels.
Lumia 925 Uncropped Sample
Nokia Lumia 925 Pro Cam Sample Image
Lumia 925 Zoom Later
Nokia Lumia 925 "Zoom Later" Sample
While the Lumia 1020's larger image file has more pixels to manipulate, the zoom later isn't a bust with the Lumia 925. The above image, zoomed far less than the max on the Lumia 925, allows you to zoom in rather nicely on the lettering on the vise.  While you may not have as much room to zoom on the Lumia 925, this Pro Cam feature can come in handy when you need to crop an image to get things just right, whether it's cropping a landscape image just right or keying in on details of an item in the picture.  It will be interesting to see how well it performs once the AT&T Lumia 920's are able to use this app.

If forced to choose just one...

Nokia Lumia 1020
If I was forced to choose just one Lumia Windows Phone solely for it's camera what would I choose?
The Lumia 920 was a ground breaker. The optical stabilization and low light performance brought smiles to many. While it is a fantastic camera, images were a smidgen soft and at times under saturated or had a cooler white balance. All easily corrected through post-processing software such as Nokia's Creative Studio but still, it left room for improvement on an otherwise very nice Windows Phone camera.

While the Lumia 920 was a ground breaker, the Lumia 1020 is a game changer. It built upon the foundation the Lumia 920 created, took a few pages from the 808 PureView camera, and throws in a few new ingredients for good measure.  Some may not like the camera hump but it's hard to dispute the quality of the images the Lumia 1020 spits out.
The Lumia 925 feels and performs like a finely tuned or refined Lumia 920 camera. Taking all the good from the Lumia 920 and improving on its short comings, the Lumia 925 captures sharper images with a touch more color saturation. Low light performance has improved and it may be the best option if you find yourself constantly in dimly lit rooms in need of taking a photo.  You still have a slight camera hump but it's no where as obvious as what you have with the Lumia 1020.
Of the three, I see the Lumia 1020 as the more capable camera across the board, which is probably not a shocker. The Lumia 925 has a lot going for it, but it's hard to ignore the larger camera sensor and higher resolution found in the 1020. I also think the Lumia 1020's optical stabilization is better tuned.
But what about for the average consumer? The Lumia 925 is easily the best all around Lumia device in terms of pricing, features and even there camera. It excels in nearly every area and it holds its own against the iPhone 5S (more on that tomorrow). While the Lumia 1020 will attract the prosumer market, the Lumia 925 is better suited for the more casual user--it's lighter, cheaper and thinner than the Lumia 1020. It's really an impressive Windows Phone and the best value (so long as you are okay with 16GB of storage).
Are you going to feel short changed with the Lumia 920? Not at all. But I do think the Lumia 925 (and the Lumia 928 for that matter) is a more refined camera than the 920.  Those moving from the Lumia 920 to the 925 will be pleased with the fine tuning Nokia has made with the camera.
When all is said and done, the great thing about these three cameras is that there's really not a bad egg in the bunch.
